Contradictions
Last week, gallup.com published an article entitle “Big Pharma Sinks to the Bottom of U.S. Industry Rankings”. Yesterday, Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin stated that they may be forced to file for bankruptcy. This comes after settlement talks surrounding the nation’s intentional opioid crisis, which has reportedly taken 400,000 American lives.
According the New York Times, the writers of medical text books receive clandestine big Pharma payouts and one of the world’s top cancer specialists has received millions of dollars from big Pharma, without any disclosure in his high profile medical journal articles.
It appears that Americans are appalled, discouraged and disgusted with Big Pharma. We collectively agree that the agenda is profit driven and that much of this big industry behavior is criminal and we can’t believe they get away with it.
I believe they get away with it because we’ve been treading water in contradiction and now we’re caught in a rip tide so strong that we’ve surrendered our ability to navigate and swim in the directions of our potential.
The united states makes up 5% of the world’s population, yet we consume 75% of the world’s prescription drugs and 80% of the world’s opioids. We prescribe 5 times more Ritalin to our American kids than the rest of the planet combined.
The political talking heads are so busy arguing over the cost of all these drugs that they fail to ask why we need them in the first place.
The epigeneticist (those who study the environment’s effect on our health) state that 80% of us will die of chronic disease, caused by our lifestyle choices (including the stresses we’re surrounded by). This is a tough pill to swallow, no pun intended.
I believe that we don’t give ourselves and each other enough credit for out ability to thrive and heal. None of us are born “dysfunctional” or lacking potential. Along the way, we all get our fair share of pies in the face and we all agree that it’s not always a bowl of cherries but what about the cliché that “life doesn’t happen to you, it happens for you”?
